Assessing your fitness before booking is critical for your safety. This guide covers the specific physical challenges of the track. You must prepare for intense uphill sections and long, knee-straining descents.

How hard is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing?

It is an advanced day hike that takes 6 to 8 hours to complete.

You will cover 19.4 kilometers and climb almost 800 vertical meters. The track starts at 1,120 meters above sea level. You will hike up to the highest point at Red Crater, sitting at 1,886 meters.

What is the hardest uphill section?

The Devil's Staircase is the most physically demanding climb on the track.

It takes 45 to 60 minutes of steep ascending from the Mangatepopo Valley. This climb drastically elevates your heart rate. The final ridge climb up to Red Crater is also heavily exposed to strong wind gusts.

Why is the downhill section considered difficult?

The descent features steep slopes covered in loose scoria, followed by a long downhill track.

The drop from Red Crater to the Emerald Lakes requires you to walk sideways. Using walking poles helps prevent sliding on the gravel. The final descent through Ketetahi Forest takes up to two hours. This section often leaves knees aching due to the continuous drop and slippery tree roots.

Can beginners do the Tongariro Crossing?

Beginners can complete the track in summer if they have strong base fitness.

You need proper hiking gear and plenty of high-energy food. During winter, between May and October, the track becomes an advanced alpine route. Beginners must book a guide and use ice axes and crampons during these months.

How does the elevation profile look?

The track starts high, peaks in the middle, and ends lower than it started.

The finish point at Ketetahi Carpark is at 760 meters. This is significantly lower than the 1,120-meter start line. Here is a breakdown of the key elevations and time estimates.

What happens if I cannot finish the track?

The track is walked in one direction, and there are no shortcuts.

There are no road access points in the middle of the national park. If you feel overly exhausted before the Devil's Staircase, turn back to the start. Once you pass South Crater, you must continue to the Ketetahi finish line.

Questions travellers ask

Are there water stations on the track?

No. You must carry 2 to 3 liters of drinking water per person. This adds extra weight to your pack, increasing the physical effort required.

Do I need hiking boots?

Yes. Sturdy tramping or hiking boots with good ankle support are required. Sneakers do not provide enough grip for the loose scoria near the lakes.

How long does the track take?

It typically takes 6 to 8 hours to walk the 19.4 kilometers from start to finish. This depends entirely on your fitness level and how many breaks you take.
