The Descent

The second half of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a long downhill walk. You will pass active geothermal areas before finishing in a native podocarp forest.

After navigating the high summits, the track begins a steady drop toward the Ketetahi Carpark at 760 meters (2,490 feet). This section takes up a significant portion of your 6 to 8-hour total hike time.

Prepare for a demanding walk on your joints. Difficulty Guide Walking poles are highly recommended to reduce the impact on your knees as you descend.

Ketetahi Forest

1.5 to 2 hoursSlippery roots

The final section of the crossing leaves the exposed alpine terrain and enters a native podocarp forest. The tree cover provides shade, but the track can be damp. Watch your step, as wet tree roots are slippery. Take your time to protect your knees during this long stretch.
