Because the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a one-way, 19.4 km hike, logistics can be tricky. Over 100,000 people walk the track each summer. To manage traffic, strict parking rules apply at the trailheads. Booking a {{keyword}} is the easiest and most reliable way to complete your hike.
Where does the track start and finish?
The track starts at the Mangatepopo Carpark and finishes at the Ketetahi Carpark.
Most hikers walk the trail in this direction. The start is at 1,120 meters, and the finish is at 760 meters. A shuttle service bridges the gap between your accommodation and these trailheads.
Can I just park at the start of the track?
No, not for the whole day during the summer season.
During the main walking season (November to April), parking at the Mangatepopo trailhead is strictly limited to 4 hours. This rule exists to stop hikers from parking there all day. If you exceed this limit, your vehicle may be clamped or towed.

How do the shuttle services work?
Shuttles pick you up from a base town or a park-and-ride lot, drop you at the start, and collect you at the end.
Operators run services from National Park Village, Whakapapa, Turangi, and Taupo. The ride takes 30 to 90 minutes, depending on where you stay. After the 6 to 8-hour hike, shuttles wait at the Ketetahi finish to take you back.

What is the park-and-ride option?
You park your car at a secure facility near Ketetahi and take a short shuttle to the start.
This is a great choice if you have a rental car. You park near the end of the trail, catch a 15-minute shuttle ride to Mangatepopo, and hike back toward your car. You will pay for both parking and the shuttle fee.

How much does a shuttle cost?
A standard shuttle usually costs between $40 and $60 NZD per person.
Prices vary by operator and pickup location. Shuttles from further away, like Taupo, cost more. Prices change, so book early.
| Transport Mode | Cost | Time / Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Town Shuttle (e.g., Turangi) | From $40-$60 NZD | 30-90 mins. Direct round trip. |
| Park-and-Ride (Ketetahi) | Fees apply | 15-20 min ride to the start. |
| Private Transfer (Auckland) | From US$349 | 48-hour trip, shuttle fee extra. |
What if the weather is bad?
Shuttle operators will cancel services if conditions on the track are dangerous.
If high winds or heavy rain hit, local transport companies will not run. This is for your safety. Read Weather Advice to learn how to check forecasts and plan backup days.

Questions travellers ask
Do I need to book my shuttle in advance?
Yes. The crossing is very popular, especially in summer. Shuttles book out quickly, so reserve your spot weeks in advance.
Are shuttles available in winter?
Fewer shuttles run from May to October. You also need an ice axe, crampons, and alpine experience to hike in winter. A Winter hiking guided tour is recommended.
Can I take an Uber to the track?
No. Rideshare apps do not operate reliably around Tongariro National Park. Rely on official shuttle services.
