The Summits & Lakes

This is the highest and most difficult section of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. You will face steep climbs, loose gravel, and high winds.

Reaching an elevation of 1,886 meters (6,188 feet), this area exposes walkers to extreme alpine conditions. The route passes directly alongside active volcanic vents and sacred crater lakes.

Because of the altitude, weather changes rapidly here. Prepare for high wind gusts along the ridges and a difficult descent over loose volcanic rock.

Red Crater

30-45 mins ascent1,886m elevation

This is the highest point of the crossing at 1,886 meters (6,188 feet). The deep red color comes from high-temperature oxidation of iron in the rock. The ridge leading up to the crater is highly exposed. Hold onto your hat and brace for strong wind gusts.

Emerald Lakes (Ngā Rotopounamu)

20-30 mins descentSteep gravel path

These three brightly colored crater lakes get their tint from dissolved volcanic minerals. The descent from Red Crater down to the lakes is extremely steep. The path is covered in loose scoria gravel. Walk sideways and use hiking poles to keep from sliding.

Blue Lake (Te Wai-whakaata-o-te-Tohunga)

15 minsSacred area (tapu)

This is a cold, acidic lake viewed from the trail shortly after passing the Emerald Lakes. Both the Blue Lake and the Emerald Lakes are highly sacred to local Māori. You must not touch the water, enter the lakes, or eat food near the shores.
